Rural Virtual Engagement

How Do I Set Up Meetings When We Cannot Meet Face-to-Face?

Ensure that everyone has a strong and accessible Internet connection and the necessary equipment (e.g., a computer, tablet, cell phone, etc.)

Find a video-conference platform (e.g., Zoom, WebEx, Microsoft Teams, etc.) that works best for your needs and is accessible. Consider how accessible these platforms are for screen readers and those with hearing disabilities, among other disabilities.

Remember to explain what you are presenting in the online platform if you have participants without video.

Thoroughly describe all activities so they can participate at home.

Remember that you are still a facilitator; you’re just now doing it online. Your group will ebb and flow, just like in person.

How is Engaging in Virtual Activities Different than Face-to-Face Interactions?

How to keep up the momentum and dynamic of a face-to-face interaction when you have to plan them virtually?

Make it fun: Use an icebreaker if folks are still getting to know each other. For example: https://con- versationstartersworld.com/icebreaker-questions/

Use humor in memes, chat activities, and so on. If you’re having fun, they will have fun. Try show and tell, engaging activities, take a group stretching break or breathing activity. Practice changing your background to funny virtual backgrounds.

Take breaks if they need it, and sign off early if they need to. Maybe consider having a group guideline that if people need to get up to take care get a drink etc., they can just do it.
